Intermediates

C-S » Category » Intermediates
In chemistry, an intermediate or intermediate is a reaction product that arises during a chemical reaction but is either not isolated or not sold for economic reasons or cannot be isolated at all for technical or chemical reasons. In reaction mechanistic terms, an intermediate is a molecule that functions in a multi-stage reaction both as the product of a reaction step and as a reactant of the subsequent reaction step. In biochemical reactions, the term is also sometimes used to refer to biochemical reaction products (for example inside the body) as intermediates to the actual end product. It is often only arbitrarily possible to draw conceptual boundaries between raw material, intermediate product and end product. In the food industry, an intermediate product is a product intended for further processing, which stands between the raw material and the end product. Intermediates are often also referred to as intermediary products, especially the intermediary particles in reactions in particle physics.
