Description

N-(p-Coumaroyl) Serotonin is an antibacterial agent which inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines by LPS-stimulated human blood monocytes. It is believed that this inhibition is a result of the partial down-regulation of cytokine mRNA levels and inhibition of NF-κB activation. Studies indicate that serotonin is essential in protecting NK cells from apoptosis. In addition, these studies show that N-(p-Coumaroyl) Serotonin is essential in the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. N-(p-Coumaroyl) Serotonin functions as an antioxidant, inhibiting the effects of high glucose-induced cell death, caspase-9 activation, and the overproduction of the mitochondrial superoxide.
