4-Hydroxy Propofol

4-Hydroxy Propofol is a metabolite of Propofol, a phenol derivative that is suggested to modulate the sensitivity of capsaicin to the transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype-1 (TRPV1) receptor. TRPV1 is a Capsaicin receptor that behaves as a non-selective cation channel that is mainly found in the sensory neurons, and specifically detects painful stimuli, low pH and heat. Studies show that Propofol modifies the kinetics of calcium channels without disturbing the conductance of the channels. In the presence of Propofol, calcium channels have been found to remain closed more time than open. Reports suggest that Propofol acts at GABA_A receptors in spinal cord studies, intensifies the ATP-activated currents of P2X4 receptor channels present in HEK 293 cells, and activate PKCε.
