A powerful oxidizer. An eye, skin, and mucous membrane irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of Li2O and Cl−. Used for swimming pool chlorination, and as a laundry bleach. See also LITHIUM COMPOUNDS and HYPOCHLORITES.
