Description

Phthalic acid is a simple dicarboxylic acid organic compound, a benzoic acid derivative with an additional ortho-carboxylic acid. Phthalic acid is discussed most commonly in relation to its ester derivatives or Phthalic anhydride, both used extensively as industrial plasticizers in the manufacture of polyvinylchlorides and other plastics. Esters of Phthalic acid are thought to function as endocrine disrupters in animals with deleterious effects upon development. The Phthalic acid ester derivative di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate is particularly demonstrated to interfere with endogenous conversion of tryptophan to niacin in rats. The monopotassium salt of Phthalic acid (KHP) is useful as a primary acid standard in analysis and in the preparation of volumetric solutions.
