Description

Resiniferatoxin is a potent analog of capsaicin that is an agonist at vanilloid receptorsis. Resiniferatoxin is also an irritant diterpenoid experimentally shown to release substance P from afferent nociceptive specific neurons. Since the compound has a 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl substituent, Resiniferatoxin has also been shown to produce 3-4 orders of magnitude greater side effects similar to that of capsaicin in the areas of thermoregulation, neurogenic inflammation, as well as agonising VR (vanilloid receptors) (Ki = 43 pM). Resiniferatoxin has also been observed to stimulate PKC (protein kinase C). Resiniferatoxin is an activator of VR1.
