Description

d-threo-PDMP is an inhibitor of the enzyme UGCG (glycosylceramide synthase) which is the intial step in the glycosylation of ceramide. Studies show that d-threo-PDMP decreases cell surface glycosphingolipids via inhibiting glycosylation. It is believed that d-threo-PDMP can increase the number of ceramide in cells which in directly leads to apoptosis and stops cellular development. Axonal studies show that d-threo-PDMP reduces the total length of the axon plexus and the number of axonal branch points. Studies involving SH-SY5Y cells indicate that d-threo-PDMP can inhibit the outgrowth of neurite.
